Marta
Pozo Gil, Architect | MVRDV, Holland
Marta Pozo Gil is an architect and licensed BREEAM assessor.
She has been working with MVRDV since 2007 where, in addition
to her role as a Project Leader, Marta leads MVRDV's Sustainability
Department. By forming environmental strategies and energy-efficiency
guidelines for each design process, Marta ensures a high
standard is maintained for all of MVRDV's projects.
Marta has been involved in the conceptualizing and execution
of projects of various scales. She is currently leading
the design team for Montecorvo Eco City in Logrono, Spain.
MVRDV's award-winning competition design (2008) envisions
the construction of a sustainable neighbourhood of 3000
units of social housing, a school and public facilities.
To achieve a CO2-neutral footprint, 100% of the required
energy will be generated on-site by means of wind and
solar power, complemented by a bioclimatic layout, recycling
facilities, reuse of greywater, etc. The first phase of
the project is scheduled to break ground in 2013.
Marta is also working on a dense urban masterplan in Bordeaux,
France - an ambitious "eco-quartier" where all energy
consumed by the masterplan will be produced on-site. The
35ha site, which will redevelop former military grounds,
extends Bordeaux's city center across the Garonne river
and provide 3200 homes, offices and urban amenities. MVRDV's
masterplan carefully respects the existing urban fabric
and creates an intimate character for the new neighbourhood.
It is referred to as a 'capillary city'; a contemporary
update of the historic European city - combining history,
human scale and individualism with density and sustainability.
The masterplan's buildings have high energy performance
ratings, and ensure natural sunlight, even in the winter.
Other sustainability considerations include: the masterplan's
water cycle, waste management and material selection.
When realised, Zac Bastide Niel will be one of the largest
zero-energy neighbourhoods in the world, and is an excellent
example of how new sustainable districts can improve the
quality of life in our cities. The project is regarded
as the most significant contemporary urban intervention
in Bordeaux. Construction is to start in 2014. Marta has
received degrees from Universidad Politecnica de Valencia,
Spain (2001) and TU Berlin, Germany (2004). She regularly
lectures and has won several awards.

Sherwin | SEYMOUR POWELL, UK
Chris Sherwin PhD, Head of Sustainability, Seymoupowell
Chris has 15 years of experience in the sustainability
field, specialising in linking environmental and social
responsibility withinnovation, product and packaging design
and marketing. He recently recently joined global design
and innovation consultancy Seymoupowell to lead their
sustainability work, but has previously held roles in
brand marketing consultancy Dragon Rouge, as Head of Innovation
at Forum for the Future, plus worked client-side in Philips
and Electrolux Chris' consulting experience includes:
sustainability strategy work with companies like The Tetley
Group, Cadbury, General Mills,Mars. Innovation and product
development work with PepsiCo, Boots, BT, BASF, SC Johnson,
LG, Samsung, Heinz, UK Technology Strategy Board. Worked
on sustainable branding with Dolmio, Ahlstrom, Tork, Comfort,
Sunsilk, SABmiller, Nature Valley. He has advised and
trained people on sustainability in Unilever, P&G, Johnson
Matthey, Interfaceflor. Chris helped develop and launch
sustainable 'products' to the market with Dulux, sony
ericcson, O2 and BP. He is a recognised thought leader
on sustainable design and innovation, and regularly present
on these issues at conferences. Chris holds a PhD in this
area, titled 'Innovative Ecodesign', from Cranfield University.

Byron
Stigge |
Level Agency for
Infrastructure, USA
Byron is a
Director at Level Agency for Infrastructure. He leads
the sustainable infrastructure design, investment strategy
and implementation services at Level and is based in New
York. Byron has focused his design career on the study
and practice of sustainable development for the built
environment. He has had the opportunity to work around
the world and at all scales of design from single family
homes to large commercial buildings to city-scale infrastructure
planning.
For the past 15 years, Byron has been designing sustainable
infrastructure plans for large scale development projects
predominantly in developing countries. At Level he engages
on energy and climate change planning, water and wastewater
management, public transportation planning, and waste
management. Level is a for-profit, mission-driven business
focused on creating urban developments which benefit urban
poor in developing countries by creating economic opportunities,
ecological preservation and social development through
innovative technologies and infrastructure design.
Byron is on the Board of Directors of the Institute for
Urban Design. He has lectured and taught at Harvard Graduate
School of Design, MIT, Yale, Washington University in
St. Louis and Columbia University. He earned an undergraduate
dual degree from Washington University in St. Louis in
civil engineering and architecture, a Master of Building
Technology from MIT and a Master of Design Studies in
Environmental Planning from Harvard.

Maciej
Siuda & Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez, Architects |
DEVEBERE PROJECT, Poland
Devebere is a project that came out of a collaboration
of two architects Maciej Siuda and Rodrigo Garcia in 2011.
Their last design, an experimental pavilion made of garbage
and air by people, awarded by the French institute of
architecture, is going to be presented during the Biennale
of Architecture in Venice 2012.
Maciej Siuda graduated with honors from the Faculty of
Architecture at Wroclaw University of Technology in 2008.
His diploma, XYZ Structure, was awarded in a number of
international and national competitions. From 2005 to
2007 he studied at the Faculty of Architecture at University
of Technology in Valencia and made an internship at the
SQArquitectos office (Valencia), and later in other offices
in Madrid, Tokyo and Alicante. Since 2011 he has been
developing his independent work, collaborating with various
architects and designers form Spain, Poland and Japan.
Co- creator of the international workshop of architecture
and urbanism: IWAU. Since 2011 he teaches design at the
Swietokrzyska University of Technology and developing
videogames graphic design for the Foundation of Neurorehabilitation
in Valencia.
Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez is a Spanish architect and designer.
He has studied in Canada, India, Chile and Spain. He received
his architectural degree with honors from the ETSAM, Technical
University of Madrid. In 2008 he developed a fractal deployable
system patent that has been awarded with several international

His works have been shown in different artistic centres
such as the Cite de l'Architecture of Paris and the Venice
Biennale of Architecture. As a teacher he has collaborated
with different universities and institutions in Colombia,
Turkey, Ahmedabad, etc. He also worked as an improvisation
actor, and awarded with the Gold Medal in the II Improvisation
World Championship celebrated in 2009 Santiago de Chile.
He is a postgraduate student at Umea Institute of Design.

Philippe Piccapietra, Grand Councellor and Delegate for
the Holy Land |
Military and Hospitaliler Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem
Count Piccapietra's family traces its origins to the 15th
century in Naples. Living in Switzerland, he has been
a member of the Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem since
1984, becoming Grand Chancellor in 2005 and Delegate for
the Holy Land in 2012. As Delegate of the Holy Land, Count
Piccapietra is looking forward to the prosperous future
of Jerusalem. Partnering Green Pilgrim Jerusalem is a
natural affiliation since the Order of Saint Lazarus of
Jerusalem has numerous reasons from its own history to
support the modern concept of green pilgrimage.
The Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem is an international
community of Christian knights and dames from many different
church traditions. It was established in Jerusalem during
the 12th century around a monastic hospice which had existed
there since the 4th century. The first knights of Saint
Lazarus of Jerusalem were lepers, forced to leave their
society. Derived from this fact, the charitable aims of
the Order today may be summarized as: "Bringing healing
of body, mind and spirit to those in need, regardless
of political, ethnic or religious boundaries." In this
century the Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem has extended
its particular concerns to include "water - source of
life" and other green issues.
Since its return to the Holy Land, the Order of Saint
Lazarus of Jerusalem has begun to provide mobility scooters
and small electric vehicles to help disabled people around
the Old City of Jerusalem, making their spiritual home
more accessible to pilgrims and citizens who have reduced

Uri
Gilad , Architect |

Uri Gilad studied at HIT, IL and the Academy of Architecture
Amsterdam where he graduated with honors under the personal
guidance of Prof. Herman Hertzberger. He gained his professional
experience while working for Herman Hertzberger and Wingender
Hovenier Architecten. During this time he was involved
in designing residential and public projects and leading
international competitions. In 2010 he joined Wingender
Hovenier Architecten as an associate architect. Since
2013 Uri is a partner at office_winhov, Amsterdam. Uri
teaches at the Academy of Architecture Amsterdam. Since
January 2010 he has been an assistant professor, at the
Amsterdam School of Arts on the research project Tectonics
in contemporary Brick Architecture. Uri divides his time
between Amsterdam and Zurich where he is involved in several
projects. One of his current projects is the winning entry
for the project Freilager Albisrieden in Zurich, which
is a large residential development with 270 apartments
under the highest sustainable Swiss standards - Minergie
-p- eco.
office_winhov is engaged with the sustainable developments
of the European city under the notion that a good building
should last a long time. Durable, usable buildings that
are firmly anchored in their surroundings are what office_winhov
is all about. In 2011 office_winhov won the international
Fritz Hoger Prize for 'Sustainable housing' with the project
in Nieuwkoop, Netherlands. The office is currently developing
an International study about, 'Energy efficiency requirements
and housing typology' for the BNA (Royal Institute of
Dutch Architects). In 2012 the office was invited to participate
in the 13th architecture Biennale in Venice, Common Ground.

Founders, Israel Biomimicry Organization, Israel
Biomimicry is a multi-discipline that promotes learning
and emulating nature's forms, processes and ecosystems
to create more sustainable human technologies and design.
The meaning of the word Biomimicry is "imitating life"
(Bio=life; mimic=imitate). Biomimicry is the science of
emulating nature's best biological ideas to solve human
problems in many fields including design and architecture.

Yael Helfman Cohen is a co-founder and general
manager of the Israeli Biomimicry Organization, a registered
non-profit organization that promotes inventive learning
and imitation from nature for sustainable technological
designs and applications. Yael holds a M.Sc. degree in
management science from the Recanati School of Business
Administration, Tel Aviv University and a B.Sc. in Industrial
Engineering & Management from the Technion - Israel Institute
of Technology. Yael is currently a Ph.D candidate in her
final stages in the field of biomimetic design (Tel Aviv
University).
Dr. Daphne Haim Langford is a co-founder and chairperson
of the Israeli Biomimicry Organization and VP Business
Development at Xenia Venture Capital leading the life
science practice. Daphne has over 15 years of managerial
experience. Daphne has been involved in medical device
entrepreneurship and specializes in fundraising, strategic
planning, marketing, distribution, reimbursement, and
product management in the medical device industry. Prior
to joining Xenia, Daphne was VP Business Development &
Marketing at Medingo. Prior to that, she was General Manager
with PerAssist, and Product Manager for Carmel Biosensor.
Daphne holds a Ph.D degree in Biotechnology from the Technion
- Israel institute of technology. |

Ela, Designer |
Founder, CEO of S-SENSE DESIGN, Israel
Adital Ela is a sustainability designer, social-entrepreneur
and teacher. Founder and CEO of S-SENSE DESIGN, and a
TEDfellow. Adital dedicates her professional life to explore
ways in which sustainability design can envision, illustrate
and manifest a green reform in the encounter between man,
object and environment. Adital holds a BA in product design
from HIT (Holon Academic Institute of Technology) and
a Masters of Design from the "Man and Humanity" program
at the Design Academy Eindhoven. Adital holds 15 years
of experience in designing products and in creative direction
and management of design teams and projects in various
design fields. Adital is a sustainability design lecturer
at the BA and MA programs of HIT - Holon Institute of
Technology and lectures regularly at conferences and leads
workshops around the world.
S-Sense Design (Sustainable Sense by Design) was founded
in 2006 to become a unique driver of change by addressing
3 bottom lines in an innovative way: Creating and spreading
innovative approaches to sustainable design; Developing

Head of Communication, Team Israel, Solar Decathlon China,

In the summer of 2013, Solar Decathlon China will
take place in Datong, China, hosted by the Chinese National
Energy Administration and the U.S. Department of Energy,
organized by Peking University, and supported by private
companies. Dubbed the "Olympics of Sustainable Architecture",
the Solar Decathlon challenges 20 collegiate teams to
design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are
Net Zero Energy Buildings and are affordable, energy-efficient,
and attractive. Team Israel is made up of students from
4 leading colleges and universities in Israel, instructed
by Dr.Arc. Joseph Cory and Arc. Chen Shalita.
"All (e) Land", Team Israel's unifying concept, is derived
from the name Holyland. It ties our local culture and
climate (All) to the energy sustainability (e) and the
unique attributes of size and new statehood of the locale
(Land). It recognizes the fact that we all share today's
energy challenges, as well as the vision that our approach
to all land development should be environment aware. Sponsored
by the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Melisron
ltd, Indan Ltd, Shenkar College of Engineering & Design,
The College of Management Academic Studies, The Porter
School of Environmental Studies, Ministry of Energy and

Haifa, for it will be tested before being sent to participate

Maya Ashkenazi M.Des, is an interior and furniture
designer, recently graduated the Industrial design class
at the Technion, IL. Working as a freelance, starting
a new business involving urban gardening, she participates
in the Israeli team as Head of Communication. |

Desert Architecture Unit, Ben Gurion University, Israel
Desert Architecture expert architect Prof. Isaac Meir
was born in Thessaloniki, is a graduate of the Technion
Institute of Technology and the Associate Professor and
former Chair of the Desert Architecture & Urban Planning,
and Dept. of Man in the Desert of the Ben Gurion University
(2005- 2010). He has published widely in several languages
and has been Visiting Lecturer at Environment & Energy
Studies, AASA, London (1992), and Visiting Professor at

ECOWEEK speakers
ECOWEEK has initiated, invited and hosted
lectures by a number of internationally acclaimed speakers,
specialists and leaders in their field. Among the ECOWEEK
distinguished speakers are Nobel Laureate and former
US Vice President Al Gore, speaker at ECOWEEK
2007 on Global Warming, at the Athens Concert Hall in
June 2007 (in cooperation with Megaron Plus); UK explorer
and leadership expert Robert Swan, OBE ECOWEEK
2007 opening keynote speaker, at the Benaki Museum in
Athens (in cooperation with the British Council).
Since ECOWEEK 2010 ECOWEEK keynote speakers included

(Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners).
'ECOWEEK 2008: Ecology + Environment + Architecture'
International Conference in collaboration with AIAContinental
Europe, keynote speakers were 'green' skyscraper and
author architect Ken Yeang, and Landscape Designer
Julie Bargmann, at the Cotsen Hall of the American
School of Classical Studies in Athens. In 2008 ECOWEEK
also hosted the director of the architectural documentary
Last Call for Planet Earth Jacques Allard,
award-winning Greek architect Alexandros Tombazis
and others.
