ECOWEEK has initiated, invited and hosted lectures by a number of internationally acclaimed speakers, specialists and leaders in their field. Among the ECOWEEK distinguished speakers are Nobel Laureate and former US Vice President Al Gore, speaker at ECOWEEK 2007 on Global Warming, at the Athens Concert Hall in June 2007 (in cooperation with Megaron Plus); UK explorer and leadership expert Robert Swan, OBE ECOWEEK 2007 opening keynote speaker, at the Benaki Museum in Athens (in collaboration with the British Council).

George Hargreaves | Hargreaves Associates, UK

George Hargreaves, FASLA, RAAR is the Design Director of Hargreaves Associates, a professional consulting firm comprised of landscape architects and planners with offices in San Francisco, California, Cambridge, Massachusetts, New York City, and London. Under his design direction, Hargreaves Associates has received 34 national awards from the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), six from the American Institute of Architects (AIA), five from the Waterfront Center, and three from Progressive Architecture.

Mr. Hargreaves was an artist in residence at the American Academy of Rome in 2009. He taught at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University for 20 years, tenured there for 12 years, and served as the chairman of the Department of Landscape Architecture from 1996 to 2003. He is the co-editor and author of "Large Parks," a book that explores large urban parks in depth as complex cultural spaces. And co-author of the recent monograph: "Hargreaves: the Alchemy of Landscape Architecture". www.hargreaves.com

Rahel Belatchew Lerdell | Architect, Sweden

Rahel Belatchew Lerdell is an architect based in Stockholm, Sweden. She studied in Paris and Amsterdam and graduated from Ecole Speciale d' Architecture in Paris in 1996. She has practiced in France, Tokyo, and Luxemburg before establishing RB Arkitektur in Stockholm. In 2006 she was awarded Architect of the Year and in 2007 the office was listed by Wallpaper magazine as one of 101 of the world's most exciting new architects. The office is currently working with several sustainable housing projects in Stockholm. Rahel Belatchew Lerdell has a record as member of jury of architectural competitions in Europe and is a steady guest critic at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. www.rbarkitektur.se

Louis Becker | Henning Larsen Architects, Denmark

Louis Becker is Principal and Partner at Henning Larsen Architects. He has been part of the management team since 1998 and is responsible for the company's activities on the global market. He has been one of the driving forces behind a number of large Danish and international projects - from significant building icons to complex masterplans. In addition, he has been project manager for numerous projects in Denmark, Sweden, the UK, the Netherlands, Greece, Spain, the US, China, Syria, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Louis was appointed Adjunct Professor at the Department of Architecture and Design at Aalborg University in 2008 after many years of teaching.

Henning Larsen Architects is the most international architecture company in Denmark. The company was founded by Henning Larsen in 1959 and today has around 150 employees as well as offices in Copenhagen, Reykjavik, Damascus and Riyadh and projects in more than 20 countries worldwide. Styliane Philippou | Architect & Architectural Historian

Styliane Philippou is an architect and architectural historian. She completed her studies in Architecture at the National Technical University of Athens and her PhD at the University of Edinburgh. She has practiced in Athens, Edinburgh, London and Paris, and has taught architectural design, theory and history at Edinburgh and Plymouth. Her research on Brazilian Modernism has been published widely. She is the author of the book Oscar Niemeyer: Curves of Irreverence (Yale University Press, 2008).
   
Isaac Meir | Desert Architecture Unit, Ben Gurion University

Desert Architecture expert architect Prof. Isaac Meir was born in Thessaloniki, is a graduate of the Technion Institute of Technology and the Associate Professor and former Chair of the Desert Architecture & Urban Planning, and Dept. of Man in the Desert of the Ben Gurion University (2005- 2010). He has published widely in several languages and has been Visiting Lecturer at Environment & Energy Studies, AASA, London (1992), and Visiting Professor at the School of Architecture, Oxford Brookes University (2000-1).

Architecture and Landscape Architecture from Harvard, specializes in the site planning and integration of architecture and landscape design in a sustainable way. Teaches at Patras and Thessaly University. www.doxiadisplus.com
   
Prof. Emilia Costa | Politecnico di Milano

Researcher in Technology in Architecture at the Faculty of Civil Architecture at the Polytechnic University in Milan. Teaches Technology of Architecture. Her PhD thesis was titled 'Architecture and Ecology: the Polarization of the Space/Material as a Crucial Paramether for the Design of the Environment'. She is a consultant to the Municipality of Modena in the realisation of an ecosustainable neighbourhood in the area of Cognento.

   
Antonis Gavalas | Architects & Associates

Antonis Gavalas is an architect engineer graduate of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Architectural Association in energy & environment MA. Has worked in Hamilton Associates in London and since 2005 lives and works in Athens. He is mainly designing and building residential projects that aim towards the integration of simple sustainable measurements with progressive architectural elements.

Brian Mark | Mott Macdonald Fulcrum Consulting & CABE

Director of Mott Macdonald Fulcrum is an expert in the engineering of sustainable cities, a member of the UK Government Renewables Advisory Board, lead contributor to the CABE Sustainable Cities Web based resource tool, a CABE specialist Olympics enabler and Eco-towns design panel member. Brian Mark was a founding partner of Fulcrum, founder members of the UK Green Building Council and engineering designers of the lowest energy UK university building plus aprox 100,000 zero carbon homes. Benjamin Gill | BioRegional Consulting Ltd

Ben, a Chartered Environmentalist with IEMA, currently works as a freelance environmental consultant based in Athens working on national and international projects. In Athens he established the methodology for the Athens Green 360 programme and has developed carbon reduction plans for 10's of members. He is consulting on two One Planet Community projects - one on Portugal and the other in Sydney. As Director of BioRegional Consulting he has worked with a diverse range of clients, looking at both community developments and management of businesses.

In 2008 ECOWEEK also hosted the director of the architectural documentary Last Call for Planet Earth Jacques Allard, award-winning Greek architect Alexandros Tombazis and others.

'ECOWEEK 2009: Empowering Youth: Ecology + Leadership + Architecture' International Conference in Athens, hosted keynote lectures by award-winning architect Shigeru Ban, and UK award-winning architect Ivan Harbour (Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners).
