Also see map Consumption culture of the contemporary global culture leads people to gain status and reflect their tastes by consuming more and more artifacts. The concepts of class and lifestyles are directing people to decorate their houses with the furniture that is supposed to reflect their identites and styles. Also the fashion and trends in furniture sector influence people to change their home furnishings frequently. But this would not be considered as a conscious attitude about ecology and sustainable development. In this workshop, the students are expected to build their status claims with ecological paradigmas and express this with the furniture designs of their home environment. As students may consider designing and producing furniture made of recycled materials, they also may bring a completely different attitude towards home furnishing in terms of sustainable development.

The workshop will be hosted at AKTO Thessaloniki (see map).

Workshop brief: Workshop site is the 30th High School. Site location: KMZ

Education is often identified as the key to a desirable future. Within the education arena, groups are committed to global education, economic education, cultural diversity, and environmental protection and improvement. The key is linking the expertise and activities of these groups and articulating a shared vision that encourages a new comprehensive approach to education for sustainability.
The workshop site is the 30th high school of Harilaou which follows the line of an old torrent. This line also includes scattered small parks and other public green areas. Therefore the outdoor area of the school will be holistically designed as a part of a larger scale green network. At the same time we aim at promoting a more public character making it a space serving education as well as recreation and local community interaction. To achieve the latter, through innovative eco-design we aim to combine educational use with community involvement programs.
In every urban space interventions to improve liveability and create an ecological and greener environment can be developed in many ways. To make such interventions sustainable they require attention, awareness and proactivity. Participation of students, teachers, children, volunteers and other stakeholders during and after installation is required for the best synergetic effect. Therefore the design process will focus on creating sustainable prototypes which will be easily applicable at similar sites improving environmental and educational aspects.

The workshop will be hosted at AKTO Thessaloniki (see map).

ECOWEEK is for sustainability not only for humans, but also for the ecological habitats and the earth's natural cycles, processes and other species with which we share our environment. In this context, this workshop will address the issue of water need for our disadvantageous neighbours within the city; birds, cats, dogs and others who are struggling for their lives in a physical setting which is increasingly abused by our ignorant behaviour in cities. The aim of this workshop is not only to focus on developing awareness but also to finding sustainable ways of designing ecological building components that can collect the water for our neighbours. Along this path, the workshop will commence with a thorough observation of the water networks of the city towards a strategic selection of various locations within the cith where scarcity of water sources. Then, it will continue with a brainstorming session for finding easy, practical, sustainable ideas for solving the problem of water distribution to the animals on the outdoor realm. The participants will first draw and then produce these components in 1 to 1 scale throughout the workshop. The final stage will be the placement of these components into appropriate locations to serve our partners in public realm as it is our respomsibility in an era whereby to respect the habitat at all scales.

The workshop will be hosted at AKTO Thessaloniki (see map).

W9 : Benjamin Gill | BioRegional Consulting Ltd
THEME: B & C & D - WORKSHOP OPEN FOR REGISTRATION

Benjamin Gill as Director of BioRegional Consulting Ltd has been managing a diverse mix of projects, such as developing sustainability strategies for large scale developments, assessing the biomass supply chain for London, assessing the sustainability proposals of developers for Local Authorities, and ecological footprinting study and sustainability appraisal of new developments. www.bioregional.com

Workshop brief: The site of the project is the 6th High School. Site location: KMZ (6th High School). Also see map
The project will focus on 'green' interventions in an existing school, with possible new addition(s) based on the principles of One Planet Living and passive solar design. The workshop aims to take a real example of how a school can be used to catalyse change within a community. It will use the One Planet Principles as a guide to design a school that is both sustainable and a living breathing teaching aid in itself. Key to this will be not looking at the school in isolation but identifying its links and connections to the community and how these can be extended and reinforced.

ECOWEEK GREENHOUSE: This project is taking place within the framework of the ECOWEEK GREENHOUSE, an international platform active in Greece and Israel. The aim of the workshop is to develop a project that will be further developed after ECOWEEK 2012 is completed. ECOWEEK GREENHOUSE projects aim towards further developing actual projects, that are often implemented. Architects and professional consultants are expected to support the work of this workshop. More about the GREENHOUSE at www.ecoweekgreenhouse.org

The workshop will be hosted at AKTO Thessaloniki (see map).

Benjamin's participation is made possible in cooperation and with the support of the UK Embassy and the British Council.

ECOWEEK 2009: Workshops | Background

ECOWEEK 2009: Ecology + Leadership + Architecture Workshop
The interdisciplinary design workshops of ECOWEEK 2009 dealt with the site of the former international airport of Athens in Hellenikon. The groups did not attempt to repeat the international competition on the site; neither give tips to improve the official plans for the site; neither attempted to impose architectural symbols and schemes from abroad. The workshops rather attempted to re-approach this important site for Athens and the residents of the Metropolitan city, based on ecology, locality, community and sustainability. More
