Workshops

ECOWEEK WORKSHOPS are an integral component of the ECOWEEK International Conferences and activity since 2008. Workshops for young architects and students of Architecture have been taking place since 2009 in Greece, Cyprus and the Middle East (Israel and the West Bank). The ECOWEEK 2010 design workshops give the opportunity to young professionals and students of Architecture, Design, Engineering and Landscape Architecture, to work side by side with known or emerging architects, designers, and engineers from the region and beyond, and to learn from them the principles of ecological design.

ECOWEEK 2010 Workshop at IPCRI Conference
Workshop Theme: The 'green' IPCRI Center, Tantur, Jerusalem

This ECOWEEK Workshop has a very specific assignment and a very short duration of only two days. The assignment is the design of a mixed use Cultural and Community Center for Israeli and Palestinian Peace organizations. The first phase of design brainstorming and ideas for this project took place at ECOWEEK 2010 in the Middle East in July 2010. This is the second 'take' on the design brainstorming for this project.

The IPCRI project is a REAL PROJECT. The more ideas we generate and the more attractive our building proposal is, the more chances we have to see this building built. So, it is a very unique opportunity for all who wish to participate.

The following workshop will take place thanks the cooperation and hosting of IPCRI at the IPCRI Conference and the workshop leaders for their invaluble input to teach, train and inspire the younger generation of professionals who participate in this ECOWEEK Workshop.

>> W8: IPCRI TANTUR Workshop

ECOWEEK is cooperating in this workshop with the Israel Palestine Center for Research and Information (IPCRI).

This workshop will design a mixed use Cultural and Community Center for Israeli and Palestinian Peace organizations. The site is located inside the Tantur historic and religious compound. The site is located opposite Beit Tzafafa in Jerusalem, very close to the Greek Orthodox monastery of Mar Elias.

The project is an actual project that IPCRI is presently considering, and includes the rehabilitation of an existing building - or its demolition, and the construction of additional facilities. The workshop will provide ideas and a preliminary design approach for the actual building.

The workshop team will meet with IPCRI representatives at the site (photo). It is very possible that through collaboration among ECOWEEK partners for this project, students may have the opportunity to also participate in the design development and final design of the building to be constructed.

ECOWEEK 2010 in the Middle East: Workshops | Background

ECOWEEK 2010: Green Buildings + Community + Sustainability
The interdisciplinary design workshops of ECOWEEK 2010 dealt for the first time with real project, on real sites, for real clients, including the Shorouq Palestinian Women Society Center at Al-Izaryia (Bethany), the Ethiopian Community Center at Kiryat Gat, the IPCRI Peace Israeli and Palestinian Center in Jerusalem, the 'greening' of the KK"L main street in the Old City of Beersheva, and others. Each assignment was unique ranging from a small building to urban planning and urban design interventions (for the 2nd Bat Yam Biennale). More

ECOWEEK 2010: Ecology + Community + Architecture Workshop
The interdisciplinary design workshops of ECOWEEK 2010 was hosted for the first time by architects in their own offices and by two workshop groups organized by the Greek Ministry of Environment. The assignment was to design a passive solar house of zero emissions at three sites: two in the center of Athens (Thisseio and Keramikos) and one in a seaside location (Loutsa). More

ECOWEEK 2009: Ecology + Leadership + Architecture Workshop
The interdisciplinary design workshops of ECOWEEK 2009 dealt with the site of the former international airport of Athens in Hellenikon. The groups did not attempt to repeat the international competition on the site; neither give tips to improve the official plans for the site; neither attempted to impose architectural symbols and schemes from abroad. The workshops rather attempted to re-approach this important site for Athens and the residents of the Metropolitan city, based on ecology, locality, community and sustainability. More
