WORKSHOPS
THEME
The interdisciplinary workshops will deal with the former site of the international
airport of Athens in Hellenikon. The groups will not attempt to repeat
the international competition on the site; neither give tips to improve
the official plans for the site; neither will attempt to impose architectural
symbols and schemes from abroad. The workshops will rather attempt to re-approach
this important site for Athens and the residents of the metropolitan city,
based on ecology, locality, community and sustainability. For example, when
we speak about developing the site into housing units, these units will
have to be of zero-emissions, zero-waste and based solely on renewable energy.
When we speak about a metropolitan park, we take into consideration the
re-use (on-site) of the construction debris that will result in demolishing
all or part of the airport facilities - as Julie Bargmann puts it: 'no waste
leaves the site'.
The groups will produce three proposals (with possible variations):
(a) A Metropolitan park of zero waste and zero debris leaving the site of
the park
(b) A residential neighborhood of zero-emissions and zero-waste, and
(c) A combination of the two.
The proposals will be presented at a press conference and public discussion
at ECOTEC 09, on Monday April 6, at Expo Athens, Anthousa (please see detailed
program).
SUPPORT MATERIALS
Support materials on the workshops will be posted shortly.

SPEAKERS & WORKSHOP LEADERS
ECOWEEK has invited in the past a number of internationally acclaimed speakers
to Athens, for example, Al Gore, to give his slide show on Global
Warming at Athens Concert Hall in June 2007 (in cooperation with Megaron
Plus), and UK Explorer and Leadership expert Robert Swan, OBE to
speak at the opening of ECOWEEK 2007 at the Benaki Museum (in cooperation
with the British Council); in 2008, at the international conference 'Ecology
+ Environment + Architecture' (in cooperation with AIAContinental Europe)
ECOWEEK invited 'green' skyscraper and author architect Ken Yeang
to speak at the Cotsen Hall of the American School of Classical Studies
in Athens, 'landscape healer' landscape designer Julie Bargmann,
director of "Last Call for Planet Earth" Jacques Allard,

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Conferences don't just happen. People work for them to happen, often very
hard, and people offer their time, expertise, ideas, enthousiasm and actual
time and work, for them to happen. We extend our deepest gratitude to all
our speakers and workshop leaders who left their very busy schedules to
be at the conference this year, to spend quality time with the young participants
of the workshops, to share their knowledge and to inspire us all. We thank
all the people who despite their busy schedules offered invaluable time,
ideas, guidance, feedback and expertise in the design, planning, programming,
logistics, layout, and content of the conference, or simply who enabled
this conference to happen thanks to their commitment, quality, and professionalism.
We thank you all!
A special 'thank you' goes to landscape designer Julie Bargmann (D.I.R.T.
Studio) who has been an inspiration throughout the conception and planning
of the conference and workshops, but due to unexpected professional reasons
Julie will not be able to join us in Athens this year .
