WORKSHOPS

THEME

The interdisciplinary workshops will deal with the former site of the international airport of Athens in Hellenikon. The groups will not attempt to repeat the international competition on the site; neither give tips to improve the official plans for the site; neither will attempt to impose architectural symbols and schemes from abroad. The workshops will rather attempt to re-approach this important site for Athens and the residents of the metropolitan city, based on ecology, locality, community and sustainability. For example, when we speak about developing the site into housing units, these units will have to be of zero-emissions, zero-waste and based solely on renewable energy. When we speak about a metropolitan park, we take into consideration the re-use (on-site) of the construction debris that will result in demolishing all or part of the airport facilities - as Julie Bargmann puts it: 'no waste leaves the site'.

The groups will produce three proposals (with possible variations):

(a) A Metropolitan park of zero waste and zero debris leaving the site of the park
(b) A residential neighborhood of zero-emissions and zero-waste, and
(c) A combination of the two.

The proposals will be presented at a press conference and public discussion at ECOTEC 09, on Monday April 6, at Expo Athens, Anthousa (please see detailed program).

SUPPORT MATERIALS

Support materials on the workshops will be posted shortly.

Former site of the Athens International Airport at Helliniko
The relocation of the Athens International Airport in 2001, from their original site at Hellenikon to the Mesogeia plain, east of Athens, made available 530 ha (5,300,000 sq.meters) of prime land within the city limits, in a relatively short distance from the city center and very close to the Saronic Gulf seashore and Mount Hymettus.

Envitec SA: recycling plant
ENVITEC SA is the main contractor of the Joint Venture that constructed the Mechanical Sorting and Composting Plant at Ano Liosia. The Plant is located adjacent to the Western Attica Sanitary Landfill Area. The plant is designed to treat more than 1000 tons of waste daily, 1/4 of the total municipal solid waste of Attica.

Meletitiki SA: passive solar office building
This office complex in Polydroso was completed in 1995. Designed by architect Alexandros Tombazis, a pioneer in passive solar design in Greece, the office has a number of passive solar solutions that result in a large decrease in energy use, including the use of night ventilation that cools the building during the summer.

The new Acropolis Museum
Designed by archiects Bernard Tchumi and Greek architect Michalis Fotiadis, the new museum was completed in 2008 after years of debate and two international design competitions. This impressive building has become a landmark in the heart of the historic urban fabric of the city of Athens. Due to the fact that the curators are currently working on the exhibits inside the museum, access to the building will be limited.

Passive solar and ecological houses in Aegina
Aegina is not known only for its pistachio trees; Aegina is also an island with an important architectural heritage, with masterpieces such as Afaias Temple and Rodakis' vernacular house, it is a fertile ground for modern Architecture, including passive solar and ecological houses by ecological building engineer Costas Tsipiras.

Sol Energy Hellas SA: energy autonomous building
After four years of continuous research Sol Energy Hellas, in cooperation with its partners NCSR "DEMOKRITOS", Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and NTUA (National Technical University of Athens), completed the design and construction of the first energy-autonomous building in Greece, using solar energy and geothermy.

Vestas Hellas SA: windfarm
Vestas SA a leader in wind energy technology will offer the opportunity for the conference participants to visit one of the renewable energy production sites in Greece. With wind, sun and geothermy taking a leading role in energy production, this visit will give an opportunity for reflection as to our present and future choices in renewable energy production.

BEAL AE: Biogas Factory, A. Liosia
The Attica region has been dumping its household waste for decades, until recycling started recently to reduce the 4000 tons of waste produced daily. The methane that is released, as organic waste decomposes, is a gas that can be utilized for the production of clean energy.

LANDCO SA: 'Green' roofs
A visit that will suprise many are the 'green' planted roofs on public buildings in the center of the city of Athens. 'Green' roofs are a valuable asset to cities, as they create natural habitats, store rainwater, produce oxygen and reduce temperatures by moderating the 'heat island' effect in the summer.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Conferences don't just happen. People work for them to happen, often very hard, and people offer their time, expertise, ideas, enthousiasm and actual time and work, for them to happen. We extend our deepest gratitude to all our speakers and workshop leaders who left their very busy schedules to be at the conference this year, to spend quality time with the young participants of the workshops, to share their knowledge and to inspire us all. We thank all the people who despite their busy schedules offered invaluable time, ideas, guidance, feedback and expertise in the design, planning, programming, logistics, layout, and content of the conference, or simply who enabled this conference to happen thanks to their commitment, quality, and professionalism. We thank you all!

A special 'thank you' goes to landscape designer Julie Bargmann (D.I.R.T. Studio) who has been an inspiration throughout the conception and planning of the conference and workshops, but due to unexpected professional reasons Julie will not be able to join us in Athens this year .

We wish to acknowledge and thank the following for their hard work, the commitment and enthusiasm (in alphabetical order - we apologize beforehand in case we missed someone):
